The Habit of Not
The other day I was reading a book by poet, Mark Nepo, called The Book of Awakening.
There was a unique idea that I really liked… and I knew I wanted to share it with you as soon as I read it. It adds light and insight into why you might hold yourself back from speaking up, even when you want to.
The passage is all about the “Habit of Not.”
The “Habit of Not” is a mindset. It’s a way of living inside of your head… and holding yourself back from having the life you want to live.
There are seven core “Habits of Not.” They are:
not seeing
not hearing
not feeling
not being present
not risking the truth
not risking the heart’s need to live out in the open
Missed Opportunities
These Habits of Not are probably the reason you don’t speak up when you have the opportunity. Or you don’t take the steps to change.
So, how often do you hear yourself say…
“Not now because I’m too busy.”
“Not now because I don’t have the money.”
“Not now because it’s going to take too much time.”
“Not now because I doubt I can ever overcome my fear.”
Listen, it’s not the fear of speaking that holds you back, it’s the “Habits of Not” that keep you from taking the steps and moving forward.
