Overwhelmed with Speaking Anxiety?
I’m always on the lookout for inspiring stories about people who overcome public speaking anxiety.
I found this story on Reddit about a woman who got married, suffered speaking anxiety, and “didn’t die.” I thought you would really enjoy it.
The bride reveals how nervous she was in the moment. Then she does the very thing I teach my clients to do when they are overwhelmed with anxiety.
“I successfully had a wedding with 130 guests and read my own vows to my partner in front of everyone.
“I was shaking so badly that many people commented on it afterwards, but I don’t think anyone could tell the difference between it being nerves about public speaking or becoming overwhelmed with emotion.
“There was a point in the vows where I had to just stop and breathe in silence, and it felt incredibly awkward. I wanted to run away and hide. But it actually was a point where many people started crying and many guests felt touched by it. In the end, I’m so so so happy I read my vows out loud and I shared that moment with my partner.
“I didn’t die and now it’s over and I never ever have to do it again!”
“An anxiety win!”
How to Calm Yourself when Anxious
I love this story so much because it illustrates the importance of how to overcome public speaking anxiety. My message to you is about silence. In fact, it’s the first step in my 7-Step process to fearless public speaking, “Be Silent.”
I believe you can access the silence within at any point, especially when you’re under stress.
This “inner stillness” grounds you. It can calm your nervous system from the inside out.
Remember, your inner stillness is always there.
And when you know the power of silence, being awkward won’t stop you!
